 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation; [se’lena kinta’nija ‘peres] April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Called"the "Queen of Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion have made her one of the most popular Mexican-American entertainers from the late 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her at third on their list of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin charts of songs. Her style of dress have earned her the moniker "Tejano Madonna". Her clothes choices are what brought her the title "Tejano Madonna" by media outlets. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was regularly critiqued for singing Tejano music, which was a male-dominated musical genre. Additionally, she was refused the opportunity to perform at Texas venues. But her popularity increased after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, and she was awarded nine consecutive times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Her debut album was self-titled and released the following year. Her brother became her main music producer and the songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) reached the top spot at 1 in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive month. Music critics called it the "breakthrough recording" of her musical career because of its commercial success. One of the songs on it, "Como la Flor", became one of her biggest signature songs. Live! (1993) was awarded Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to do so. Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of America's top Latin albums. It was critically acclaimed as the first Tejano music album to be commercially viable, and it quickly became one of the most sought-after Latin subgenres of Latin music of the time.
